Double Dip EP Review - Degenerate - "Degenerate" and Discarnate - "The Derangement&qu
SOMETHING OLD, SOMETHING NEW

Degenerate – Degenerate EP – Originating from Amsterdam, Degenerate contacted me about possibly reviewing their debut material, and I’m awfully glad that they did. This collection of four tracks from the Dutch act is capably produced and well-written, with each track displaying its own hooks and strengths. Mashing together modern death and thrash metal in their own unique way, Degenerate have put out quite a solid greeting to the metal world.
Released this past March, the four tracks on Degenerate’s self-titled EP are heavy, groovy, and head-bang-inducing. Immediately, “Gaia’s Vice” kicks off the release with its energy and catchiness, and then it is off to the races from there. “Dead Set” and “Half-Life” are both driven, raucous tracks that aim to please, and “Lizzy” is lengthy, lean, and lovely. Altogether, Degenerate’s debut EP is solidly sharp, and it should amass these new Dutch modernites a good amount of well-warranted attention.

Discarnate – The Derangement EP – Chicago’s new blackened death metal outfit Discarnate are already building quite a name for themselves, having recently been offered the local opening slot for the Chicago stop of the Metal Alliance Tour featuring veteran acts like Dying Fetus, The Acacia Strain, and Jungle Rot (among others). A couple weeks after that, the quintet will independently release their debut EP, The Derangement (due out 5/17/16), and the five tracks contained therein are a fitting introduction to this brutal, talented ensemble.
My favorite cuts from Discarnate's The Derangement EP include “Illusory”, “Ominous”, and “Spit Mask”. Although the production leaves a little something to be desired, the five tracks that make up The Derangement are sturdy, violent, and highly enjoyable. The overall feeling the music gives you is barbarically energetic, and when it comes right down to it, that’s all that really matters, right? Discarnate’s The Derangement is an estimable inaugural release from the Chicago fivesome, so pick up a copy on May 17th, and do your bit to support independent metal!
