SOMETIMES YOU GET LUCKY

By: Geoff Teach
This past weekend, I caught a show at one of my favorite venues here in Chicago. Although my primary intent in attending was to support the local lads in Vukari, the lineup also offered me the opportunity to check out a couple of out-of-town acts whom I had never heard before. As I am eternally hunting for new bands to write about, shows like this always pique my interest - and Saturday, I hit the jackpot.
Hailing from Fort Worth, Texas, Krigsgrav’s live set blew me away; and as The Fates would have it, the post-black metal quartet had copies of their brand new release, Waves of Degradation (Bindrune Recordings), with them for purchase. Released this past Friday, Waves of Degradation is five remarkable and prolonged compositions of psychedelic black metal splendor, teeming with tasty riffs, adept arrangements, and dynamics. Krigsgrav knocked this one out of the park, my friends and readers. Believe that.
One part shoegaze, two parts atmospheric stoniness, and eleven parts black metal brutality, Krigsgrav’s Waves of Degradation is satisfying from start to finish. Opening with the twelve-minute number, “Under the Trembling Stars”, Krigsgrav give the listener a heavy dose of all of their many facets in one glorious sitting – and we’re only getting started. “Son of the Stones” is melodically pleasing and sadly introspective, with large sections of shoegaze that lull and sway through its extensive, eleven-minute breadth, and “Failures of Man” is flat-out beautiful, with its many stony passages and octave-laden verse riffs. The well-placed and well-performed acoustic track “To Rest Beneath the Waves” then soothes the savage ear for a few moments before the final, fifteen-minute magnum opus “As Color Fades from the Earth” (my favorite cut, hands down) draws in the listener with its undulating, addictive melodies. Truly I tell you, Krigsgrav’s Waves of Degradation is one of the best releases of early 2016.
