Review of They Die Screaming - "The Organic Phenomenon of Human Decay"
BLOOD, GUTS, AND GOREY GLORY
By: Geoff Teach
Chicago, Illinois’s gore metal quintet They Die Screaming are a local live favorite here in my hometown. As they begin to set up, the fake severed heads, limbs, and skulls are festooned upon anything that isn’t nailed down, and just before taking the stage, the members customarily douse themselves in prop blood. Then, during the performance, the real blood gets flowing as vocalist Jerry Kavouriaris pummels his own head until the hemoglobin gushes – and then there is the music...
A few months ago, They Die Screaming unleashed their long-awaited debut full-length, The Organic Phenomenon of Human Decay (Independent) and if you’re looking for pleasant, progressive, or prettified, then you've come to the wrong place. Comprised mostly of songs that the band has been performing live for years, The Organic Phenomenon of Human Decay is eight ample death metal offerings that are only for the strong of stomach. With lyrical content that covers everything horrific from the risen deceased to Satanic terror and necrophilia, They Die Screaming are all guts and gorey glory.
Similar in sound and influence to Exhumed and early Cannibal Corpse, The Organic Phenomenon of Human Decay is a murderously gratifying death metal bloodbath. Some of the superlative songs include “Paralyzing Terror”, the title track, “The Organic Phenomenon of Human Decay” (my absolute favorite – Justin Clark’s leads are especially tasty), “Off The Meat Hook and into My Bed”, “The Green Inferno”, and the finisher “It Kills at Night”. If you get high on metal that is fierce, frenzied, and fucking sick -pick any meaning of the word that you like - then They Die Screaming’s The Organic Phenomenon of Human Decay is the album for you.
