Review of Antlion - "The Prescient"
EVERY YEAR... EVERY. DAMN. YEAR.
By: Geoff Teach
Each January, I seem to discover amazing albums that were released late in the previous year, and I always wind up kicking myself for not having heard them sooner so that I might have added them to my “Best of the Year” list. Here in early 2016, it is the quartet hailing from Ottawa, Ontario, Canada known as Antlion that have made me boot my own backside for yet another consecutive year.
Released late last November, Antlion’s The Prescient is stark, progressive metal magnificence (cleverly, the band describes their sound as “Psychedethic”). Raw yet refined, chaotic yet controlled, The Prescient combines fantastically progressive guitar tones, rhythms, and riffs with the drive of death metal vocals and occasional blast beats to spawn a sound that is uniquely their own, however, if you pressed me hard enough for comparable acts to Antlion, I’d tell you to put White Arms of Athena, Scale The Summit, Between the Buried and Me, and Daath into a blender, hit puree, and have a nice, long pull of the beautiful concoction that results.
Some of the tastiest songs out of the eight on Antlion’s The Prescient include “Hubris”, “Cycle of Failure”, “Hive” (my personal favorite), “Spire”, and “The Prescient: Part I” – and the two remaining tracks not listed aren’t too shabby, either. To not mince words, The Prescient by Antlion is fucking phenomenal, and let this review be my solemn oath: If I had heard this album upon its release, it would’ve made the Top 10 of 2015, no ifs, ands, or buts. Be sure to get Antlion’s The Prescient in your earholes, my beloved readers. You won’t regret it.
Keep it Metal! \m/
