LOCAL LUNACY / INDEPENDENT INSANITY
By: Geoff Teach
This week in Chicago, two local acts released E.P.’s, and although the total sum of the two put together is only seven tracks, both E.P.’s are full of great, word-worthy music. So instead of my usual full review, please enjoy these two vignettes, spliced together into one piece! Keep It Metal! \m/

Beyond De-th – “Beyond De-th” (Independent, released 11/25/14): Chicago metal fans are beginning to realize that if you want to catch one of the finest live death metal trios in the city, you better find a way to go see Beyond De-th. Fast, heavy, lively, and loud, Beyond De-th mix elements of thrash into their songwriting, but the vocals and overall delivery of the rhythms and riffs are pure, unadulterated death metal. Hoping to keep their name on the lips of the local metal heads, Beyond De-th released its second E.P., “Beyond De-th”. With two new tracks to make your ears bleed, “Beyond De-th” is well-produced and certainly worth giving a solid listen. “Death That Never Comes” sways and thrashes, beats and bashes, while “Blood Beneath The Snow” is a driving, galloping head destroyer. Go head to their Bandcamp page, have a listen for yourself, and send Beyond De-th a few well-deserved dollars to download the tracks for your own listening pleasure! Approaching Dawn – “Adversity” (Independent, released 11/26/14): In 2012, Chicago’s strong, local groove metal community only became stronger with the release of Approaching Dawn’s “Evolution of Reality”. Now, eager to get new music out to their fans, the members of Approaching Dawn saw fit to step into the studio and lay down the five tracks that comprise “Adversity” (three songs have been released for streaming on their site, two more tracks, "Made By You" and "Dying Pulse", appear on the physical E.P.'s). Pummeling, pounding, and immense in sound and style, “Adversity” seems to pick up right where “Evolution of Reality” left off, with loads of back-breaking rhythms, groove riffs, and a full complement of melodic progressions that morph into brain-bending breakdowns and speedy fretboard attacks. “Spit” blazes a trail of destruction with a climax that kicks major ass, “The Abuse” seems to mirror its title with its punitive riffs, and the title track, “Adversity”, has as much melodic power as it does punishing vocals and groove breakdowns. Head to Approaching Dawn’s homepage to hear the three streaming tracks for yourself right now! http://www.approachingdawn.com
