MID-MAJOR MAYHEM

In a year that has already seen a plethora of astounding metal releases, yet another groundbreaking album is now sitting on the shelves of your local record stores, waiting for you to discover its magnificence. Reading, Pennsylvania’s progressive death metal newcomer, Black Crown Initiate, has recently released its first full-length album, “The Wreckage of Stars” (eOne Music), and to be barbarically blunt: This album kicks some major motherfucking ass. I’m utterly blown away. Black Crown Initiate mixes super-sick death metal riffs, vocals, and rhythms with progressive bridges, acoustic interludes, and absolutely gorgeous vocal harmonies to stunning effect, and the result is an album that not only rivals any of the best metal releases of 2014, but also rivals any of the best metal releases of the 21st century. Yes, it is THAT fucking good.
From start to finish, “The Wreckage of Stars” defines the term “dynamic metal”. This album repeatedly goes from totally and devastatingly heavy to resplendently thought-provoking in the blink of an eye, and the effect is absolutely entrancing. Starting with the opener, “A Great Mistake”, Black Crown Initiate immediately puts all of its many dimensions on full display, and though every track on this masterpiece is phenomenal, it is the middle of the album that is truly awe-inspiring. Tracks such as “The Malignant”, “This Human Lie Manifest” (my personal favorite on the ten track effort), “Withering Waves”, “To the Eye That Leads You”, and “The Wreckage of Stars” embody everything that is amazing about this band – and in sequential order, no less. Finishing solidly with other great offerings like “Purge” and “Linear”, Black Crown Initiate’s “The Wreckage of Stars” is progressive death metal gold, and I strongly urge you to acquire yourself a copy as fast as you can. I promise that you will NOT be disappointed.
Keep It Metal! \m/
